Get Your Emotions Unstuck

Are your good feelings taken hostage to your situations? Do you ever say to yourself:

I’ll finally feel relief when this situation resolves itself.

I’ll finally feel joy when I’m not so busy and stressed.

I’ll finally feel love when I get in the right relationship (at the perfect time).

We all do this. Our brains are wired to protect us, so it forces us to live in fear to prevent further emotional damage. It’ll have us asking all the worst case scenario questions, hoping and praying that external situations magically change. I’m sure you know this though: once a situation resolves itself, the next one is right on its heels. Once the assistant manager finally gets the promotion of becoming manager, she may feel temporary satisfaction—that is until she comes to work the next week and has 5x the responsibility.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were an invention where you could feel positive feelings before the external event happened? Well, there one such invention. It’s called your brain. Your brain can do wonderful things, you know?

Most of us have our brains conditioned towards past events that were filled with trauma. We continually play out what we don’t want to have happen, but in doing so our bodies and emotions are getting in stuck loops. In fear, we’re literally meditating and visualizing the opposite of what we want to occur. That doesn’t have to be the case though.

You can actually train your brain towards creating the future reality you crave, thus eliciting a different set of feelings in the present moment. Don’t believe me?

Athletes condition themselves in this way all the time. A tennis player who has never made a grand slam final will envision what it feels like to walk out onto center court. They’ll envision where to serve and where they want to hit returns against a player they’ve never played. Guess what happens when you continually envision that future event?

Your body conditions itself to play out the vision in your mind. Your feelings follow suit. From here, you can program increased levels of adversity coming your way and visualize how you want to respond. What happens when your opponent hits a let court on match point? You automatically sprint towards that ball! So just in case that bizarre event happens, you’re emotionally ready for it!

So what are some areas of life you’re feeling stuck? Do you really need to wait for a certain event to occur next week, next month, or next year to experience the peace, freedom, and joy that may already be awarded to you in the present?
